GX110 modem installation....chasing my tail....please help!

My husband purchased a GX110 (used) for our anniversary... hence, I have no documentation, etc., to refer to.  Recently, I had to reformat, and have managed to get everything working except for the modem.  It's a 3Com USR 56K Win Fax Modem INT.  I found the appropriate driver, the problem is this:  when the PC detects the modem and installs it, it automatically assigns it to COM3, which is not recognized in my device manager.  And when I try to install a new COM port, it installs COM5, rather than COM3.  I've tried unistalling and reinstalling, as well as reseating the modem.  Still, it ends up the same way each time.  Is there some way to fix this, other than with gasoline and a match??
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Sounds like the HAWK modem. However you did not provide enough info to help.

What OS?
What service pack?
What is the Serial Number/Service tag of the machine.

Sorry...

Running Windows 98SE; Service Tag: 4BBSG01; unsure about the service pack... where would I find that info?

I've tried installing the Hawk driver, but the Hardware Wizard says the appropriate driver is not at that location. Thanks again for any/all assistance.

It says your service tag is invalid.

98 Second Edition is the Important part.

WIN98 Non Second Edition uses WIN95 VXD drivers instead of the WDM drivers that
98SE/ME/2000/XP uses.

WIN98 is un supported due to its VXD driver requirement. That means if you cannot find WIN95 drivers you MUST upgrade to 98SE or higher.

Typically These days I recommend WIN2000 because 98/98SE/ME

The GX110 has many audio options.  Depends on if its Onboard or a Card.

Same thing with modem

This is only a guess as I do not know what the original config for your system is due to invalid service tag.
