hardware f-wall

I have a netgear hardware firewall for my desktop.
Is the equivalent for a laptop a device you install 'within' the pc or an external device similiar to an antenna?

Again, any computer connecting through the router is protected by the router's firewall.  If what you are asking is how you can connect a laptop to the router through wireless, then yes, you will need a wireless network card in the laptop (assuming that your router is a wireless router).  Once you can connect through the wireless router, then the router's firewall will be protecting the laptop as well.  Of course if you connect to someone else's wireless router or other wireless network, it may or may not be protected by a hardware firewall.   It always best to also run a software firewall.

Sorry to be vague-this is for educational purposes only. I am all set with my router. What I was trying to understand was how a firewall, other than a software one, worked with a portable laptop. I think you need a card or something in the pc and a means of transmitting to that pc. If so, you musn't be able to roam too far from the firewall-correct?

Thank you for the patience.

Please try to explain a little better what you are asking?  What is a netgear hardware firewall?  Is it a router?  If so, then any computer connected to the internet through that router will be protected by its firewall.  How are you planning to connect the laptop to the internet?

One last question if I may-what is the average range of this wireless firewall with the pc which has a card in it. Could you be as far as another state or do you need to be around the house?

All my information goes to  my 'learning folder' for future reference. Thank you.

Again, you are asking about a router with a firewall, not a hardware firewall per se.  The range of a wireless router is about 300 feet under ideal conditions (i.e. line of direct sight to the router without any intervening walls, vegetation, etc.).  A wireless router is strictly a local interface to the internet.
