Hardware switch off

I have a dell studio 1588. I was connecting fine to the Internet but then received the message no wireless connectivity. Hardware switch off. I have done a complete system restore turned on the wireless button at f2 repeatedly but the problem persists. Someone I spoke to suggested a new wireless card. How can this help if the switch is not working. Any suggestions about doing that. I also tried reinstalling driver to no avail
