Hardwire Laptop with Desktop
I have a Dell Dimension
desktop and a Dell Inspiron
laptop. I have connection between the two by way of wireless, but I want to HARDWIRE the laptop to the desktop. I have a Cat-5 cable, but how do I connect them?? The
desktop will be the
host [if that needs to be done] and the
laptop will be the "guest" [again only if that needs to be done.
Thanks

If you want to connect the network cards between the two computers directly, then you will need a special network cable called a cross-over cable. A regular network cable will not work. You will also need to assign local IP addresses to each network card (192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 for example). On this type of network there is no host nor guest.

But will I still have the same problem I have with going to/from the PC [with 98 rev2] and the laptop [with XP-Home]; i.e., I can get shared files on the laptop from the PC but not the other way around.?
Does the Cross-over cable have RJ-45 connections?
Thanks for the previous reply.

Yes, a cross-over cable has RJ45 connectors. The difference is that a cross-over cable has the send and receive pins reversed on each end.
If you cannot transfer files over your wireless network, then you whatever is blocking the file transfer will also likely block transfer over an ethernet network. Have you eliminated all firewalls as the cause of your inability to transfer files?
