Have MAC address, need IP address

I have the mac address of a piece of hardware, and I need to find the IP address. The device itself appears to be programed using a hand held console, which I don't have, so I have to go the long way round to find the IP address.

The network is unfamilar to me, and apparently does not have any advanced tools on it. The local network admin usually looks up these things manually using the DHCP and ARP etc. Which I am rather rusty at.

Any advice on how I should proceed. Idiots guide only, please.

It would be helpful to know how this device is connected to the network.

If it were a simple home network with a router acting as a DHCP server, it would be simple.  In your case, you would need access to the DHCP server to figure out the correspondence between the device and its IP address.  This would be true even if the device has a static IP address, because the DHCP server would have to know that so that it wouldn't assign the IP address to another device.

Most of us answering questions on this forum can deal with simple networks where the user has complete control of the network.  Yours is a more complicated scenario and you may get a more informed response if you posted to a forum in the Servers and Storage section of the forum.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I'm not 100% certain what the setup is, I'm not familiare with the system myself. What details do you need?

To the best of my knowledge the device (which has no local console) is connected to a standard TCP/IP Cat5 ethernet running over Cisco Switchs in a tree topology. IP addresses are typically assigned automatically via DHCP on a 30 day lease, though in this instance the device may have a fixed IP.

If you want a hypothetical senario, imagine that I have a device (For simplisity's sake, a network printer). I've connected this printer into a basic office network (Simple Cisco switch and basic wiring cabinet, TCP/IP, cat5). My network has a DHCP, but I don't know whether my printer is set up on a fixed IP, or if it is set to automatically pick on up. I need to know the IP, but all I have is the mac address.
