Having trouble downloading drivers

Ok, my problem started when i reinstalled 2002 xp with sp2, now i cannot connect to the internet.  I have a ubuntu live CD and so i tried that, and now i can connect to the internet.  So i went online and figured out what the trouble was, and looked up my drivers, and i need these drivers: Ethernet controller, multimedia audio controller, and video controller.  Well, i went to the Dell support site, and now it seems i cannot figure out how to download a usable file.  Every time i download a driver from the list i get this "Delldriverdownloadmanager.application" it is a plain text document and is 9.3 kb in size (not the 3.2 mb file i expect to get.)  What am i doing wrong?  I am overlooking something, i dont know what.  Please help me figure this out.  I am a beginner at these things. I am using a Dell Optiplex gx260 with 2002 windows xp.  Please save me from this Ubuntu horror...smile.

daninad,

Forget using the Dell Download Manager and tell it to use the browser. Here is why you do NOT have those items. Download them to a friends computer and burn them to a disk or flash drive.

The Desktop/Notebook Utility needs to be installed first, then the chipset drivers. If they are NOT installed first, then the rest of the drivers will fail to install.

Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

:emotion-55: Hint :emotion-55: When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

QuickSet(Laptop only)

Okay, so I did them out of order on a reinstall. Have I now totally hosed my computer? Is it now a worthless paperweight?

9878,

Try installing the drivers in order, starting with the Desktop/Notebook Utility and then the Chiset drivers. After you install these, then go down the list. When you're done, then look in the device manager and see if you have any yellow exclaimination marks and/or red x's.

For the most part, you should be ok just starting with the procedure above as long as it is in order.
