Help with Internet Connection Sharing

I have a Dimension 8300 and I rebuilt an old Dell Precision 220 using spare parts. The 8300 is connected to the internet through a wireless card which communicates with a wireless router. The Precision 220 is connected to the 8300's ethernet port using a Cat 5e crossover cable. By manually assigning IP addresses, I can share files between the 2 computers, but I would like to connect to the internet with the Precision 220 so I can download windows updates, new drivers, etc. I did an advanced search and followed some of the instructions on other posts, for example:

I assigned the 8300 the IP 192.168.0.1

I assigned the Precision 220 the IP 192.168.0.2 and told it to use the gateway and DNS server 192.168.0.1 (the IP of the 8300). Still no luck. The automatic ICS wizard also doesn't help. Any ideas or suggestions?

Since you have a router, why not use the router to share the internet connection (i.e. connect the computer directly to the router) rather than use the clunky internet connection sharing?

The router is a floor below me. It would take about 50 feet of ethernet cable to connect it. I guess I could wait for a sale and buy another wireless PCI card, but I am mostly interested in getting this computer updated and giving it to my parents for christmas. They have an old Pentium 2 and really only need a computer for browsing the internet, Word and financial programs. Unfortunately even the Pentium 2 is having a hard time with that these days. I would just like to have it all updated before I give it to them. If anyone has any ideas about getting the internet connection sharing to work, it would be interesting to get it to work, even from just a learning standpoint.

Make sure that the IP addresses you assigned on not in the same range as those assigned by the router.  Try leaving the
gateway and dns fields blank.

I have new Dell and cannot map a drive.  Did not have any issues with my previous desktop.  Are there settings that need to be made to connect?

Went to CompUSA today and bought a wireless-G card for 10 dollars. Big sale today apparently. So I guess I don't need to use ICS (which didn't work with the DNS and gateway fields blank either). Still, it would be interesting to learn how to get it to work. Thanks for all the help volcano11, your help and the help of others in other threads on this forum helped me get the file sharing working at least.
