Help with Router ICS

I am having Roadrunner installed tomorrow!!!!! I know that they will not install my network so I need help!! I have the Linksys model Befw11s4. I was looking at the instructions which seem easy but.....it says I will need to know which type connection the isp uses and the Host name and Domain name to install.

I went to the RR website and they don't volunteer info on networking or that info except that they are a dynamic ip address connection. Where can I get the info needed to get this up and running!

I plan on connecting my desktop directly to router and laptop by wirerless!!! Can someone please help?? Is this simple to do?? Also desktop is win98 and laptop is winxp. Is that a problem??

Thanks!

By default most all routers have their WAN setting (the port that connects to the world - modem - set for Dynamic IP addressing.  That means it will request an IP address from Roadrunner and they wil issue one.  Linksys is that way.  So you *should* just be able to plug the router to the modem and the wired computer (set it's NIC Ethernet TCP/IP settings to get an IP address automatically also) and be on the internet.  If you have the router now, you can get the desktop and the wireless notebook connected to the router beforehand so all you have to do is connect the router to the modem and be on your way.

On the mainsetup page of the Linksys router ( http://192.168.1.1 ) , you will see the name of the SSID for the wireless connection, in this case it is linksys, whcih is the default.  That name must match the SSID name on the wirelss netwrok adpater card also and these names are case sensitive..

If encryption is enabled, again you must have a match but I would suggest getting a good connection before enabling encryption.  Make sure to disable the "broadcasting" of the SSID.  This will not affect your signal, just keep it from prying eyes.

Post back with any problems.

Ok! Thanks! It's up and running! Not quite sure what the broadcast thing is about but I diabled it!!! By default it was enabled! I thought the router itself acted as a firewall??? Now that I am sharing the internet with no problems can I safely share files???

Four must things to do for wireless security:

Turn off the SSID broadcasting feature

Change the default name of the SSID

Enable Encryption (64 or 128 bit)

Enable MAC Filtering

If you do all four of these, you can sleep reasonably well at night.

Turning off the SSID broadcast hides the router from casual uninvited users - they have to know the name of the router to associate to it.  So it is really about your internal network security.  If you plan on sharing files on a wireless network, I would also add WEP or better yet WPA encryption, MAC address filtering, changing the administrative password to something hard, changing the LAN IP address of the router, and limiting the range of LAN IP addresses to the number of computers you want on the network.  If you are at a university these are a must, and not insurance you won't get hacked - someone with the determination would be in within a day or so.

Thanks for the advise! But let me get this straight! Now that I have changed the ssid names does that act as a firewall from outside Hackers?? So if I am just on a home network I should be ok?? Do I still need to do the WEP key?? How is it done! Thanks

Reset the router to factory defaults and start over.  It is in the manual.  And your concern about hackers is on the wireless side (really think about having sharing enabled on your network computers) not from the internet.
