Home network user name in Vista

I have an XPSM2010 (XPS on network) with Vista Business x64 and an Inspiron 1720 (Jr on network) with Vista Home Prem x32. I have the same admin account on both (James). When I log on from Jr to XPS it works fine. I can get in all shared folders no sweat. When I try to log onto Jr from XPS, when I enter user name James and pw, it changes the user name to XPS\James and says incorrect user name or password. I tried to go into user acct on Jr and set up an XPS\James account on it so there would be an account on there with the name XPS is trying to use. It tells me the " \ " is an illegal character and can't be used in an account name even though it tries to log me on with one. I tried to go into user account on XPS and set up the user name and password in the "manage network passwords" using just "James" as user name with the pw. When I try to log on Jr, the user name and password show up on the log in dialog box as James with pw entered, but when I hit log on, it changes the name to XPS\James and won't let me in. I have looked at all the settings I can find on both and everything seems identical. I even went into the administative tools and blundered around in there. Thank goodness I have enough experience in messing up these things to create a restore point before I venture in beyond my ability! Long story short, that restore pt came in REAL handy. Any help on this would sure be appreciated.

I had wrongly posted this on the operating systems forum, but got a response from BELL BOY with the following result. After further chasing down links on the DavidLevy post from BELL BOY, I wound up here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947232 . I installed the "Fix it for me" button on both computers. While this seemed to work on Jr, it caused a problem on XPS. When the system rebooted, it started the "completing installation of Logitec Quick Cam" (which was already long since installed & working fine). When it got almost to the end, it came up with an error linked to the registry key that the "fix" had installed. I clicked on close, and it started all over. It seemed to be caught in an endless loop. I finally had to uninstall Logitech Quick Cam in remove programs, and delete camera in device mgr to make the installation stop. I restore the restore pt the fix had made, reinstalled camera and everything was good. I tried the login again, and it worked. If you choose to let the MS "Fixit" install this key, be careful! But it did seem to work OK on Inspiron. I can now get through both ways to copy files, etc. Thanks again to BELL BOY and DavidLevy.

Hi again JTELDER56

Great news then  :emotion-21::emotion-2:

Didn’t know about your Logitech Cam, interesting

A different issue but a few years ago USB Logitech Cam devices were causing all sorts of havoc on Dell computers – boot loading problems & USB hub conflict issues

Anyway, thanks for feedback, just the kind of helpful reply that is often missing in DCF threads

If you have time, suggest you post the same feedback reply in original MS OS forum thread & then click on the Suggest as Answer in both your feedback replies

This will mark your threads in both Forum as Solved & help others searching for possible solutions
