Is file and printer sharing enabled on each computer?  Have drives or folders and printers been designated as shared resrouces on each computer?  Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on both computers (this assumes that the 4100 is not running Windows XP)?  Which version of Windows is running on the 4100?  Is it logged on to the network?  Are you absoultely sure you have disabled all firewalls.  For Windows XP, File and Printer Sharing must be checked off on the exceptions tab of the Windows firewall.  If you have third party applications like Norton Internet Securiy, McAfee Security Center, or Zone Alarm, these are all firewall programs and the firewalls must be configured to allow local network traffic.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply.

Both machines are using XP (Home on the desktop and Pro on the laptop).

Pretty sure that I disabled all firewalls. Desktop has Zonealarm Pro, and lapop has McAfee. Also disabled the Windows firewalls on both machines.

Not sure how to 'share' drives and folders. Printer is set for sharing.

Not sure how I 'log into the network.'

For Windows XP, File and Printer Sharing must be checked off on the exceptions tab of the Windows firewall.

My Windows firewall does not show a File or Printer Sharing check box in the exception tab.

I did make a change to my Zone Alarm that allowed me to ping the laptop w/o a 'timed out' response.

If the Windows 98/ME computers have Client for Microsoft Networks as the primary network logon, make sure that the proper username and password are entered when these machines boot.  If Windows logon is the primary network logon, make sure that either a null password is used or that the correct password is used when booting these computers.  Hitting the cancel button at the password prompt may prevent network connectivity.

Do you have Windows XP SP2 or SP1.  SP2 should have File and Printer Sharing on the exceptions tab. For SP1, the Windows firewall has to be completely disabled as it will not allow File and Printer Sharing.

To make sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled, go to network properties, double click on your connection.  On the general tab, File and Printer Sharing should be present.  If it isn't, you need to Add it.

I have the same problem.  I spent 1 and 1/2 hours talking to a rep. Friday to no avail.  She was to call me back Sat. and I am still waiting on that phone call.  We have shut off all firewalls, removed the Spyware programs, etc., etc. etc., but I still cannot print from the laptop.  I have Windows XP Service pack 2 on both.  Have tried to correct using the Microsoft article 871122.  Still nothing.  Router is a D-Link DI-614+.  Another strange thing is that my son-in-law can print from his laptop and see my shared desktop files.

Grumpy,

I also spoke w/ a rep for about and hour the other day with no positive results. I was also supposed to receive an phone call from the rep. later, but I never received the call.

Did you ever solve your problems?

Finally got my network up and running.  Ended up double checking all computer descriptions, names and work groups.  Disconnected firewalls on the virus checkers.  Using Windows XP only.  I did a cut and paste on the computer names and descriptions and voila, I have a network.  I think the upper case/lower case was my problem.  Also made sure my printer was being shared.  That tab had not been turned on.    Hope this helps.

The Grumpiest Handyman yet.
