How can I do this ? (Network + Switch)
Hi,
Need some help from network gurus over here. Here is my situation.
I've old Sony VAIO machine, which is connected to various peripherals (printer, scanner, webcam etc).
I'm using VOIP from vonage so my broadband connection from ISP comes into VONAGE device, from VONAGE device connection goes into my network card on Sony VAIO. So my current computer is hardwired to internet.
I've recently bought 4600. I want to share monitor, keyboard & mouse between this two machines, i.e. I dont want to use only one monitor, keyboad & mouse between this two machines.
Next I also want to share resources like harddisk & drives on VAIO with my 4600. What solution is avialable for this thing. I know I can use KVM switch to share monitor, keyboard & mouse but what if I while I'm working on 4600 & I want to use DVD drive on sony VAIO or I want to copy files from sony VAIO's harddisk to 4600 harddisk.
Also I want to keep my current VONAGE service intact.
thanks
MJ

mjoshi3,
To share the broadband connection and perform File and Printer Sharing, you will need a router, such as the Linksys BEFSR41. It supports up to 4 wired PCs. Or you could get a wireless router such as the linksys WRT54G, which supports 4 wired PCs and an additional 250 wireless PCs. Other manufacturers include D-Link, Netgear and Belkin. Stay away from Truemobile. See this Vonage diagram for how to wire the router into you setup.
Yes, you can use a KVM to share the peripherals. Both PCs can be booted at the same time and you can switch between the two PCs whenever you want. Belkin makes good KVMs.
The tutorials here will help you configure the two PCs for networking.
