A DHCP server hands out an IP address for a specific time -- whatever time it has been set to deliver. Might be ten minutes, 24 hours, even indefinitely (which is how static DHCP is implemented).
After half the time to expiration, clients generally request renewal of the IP address.

I'm using dell dimension 8400, wired to a versalink 327 modem using ethernet connection. Verizon is my service provider. My connection keeps on being disconnected, then it will be up again, I really think it has something to do with the lease time. Can you help me guys figure this up?
How can I set the modem not to renew leased ip address within 24 hours? Or even within 48 hours or a week?
I also have another computer setup on my other house, same dimension 8400, modem is 6100, and connected to a linkys (BEFSR41) 4 port router. Will it make a difference to set it up? will I need to change the router's settings to avoid renewing of leased ip, or will I need to do it on the 6100 modem?
