compys have no right to hate you! i went to circuitcity.com and they have b/g notebook adapters for $40. i'll give you the link to the website. get the linksis or netgear (they have wireless security). good luck and post back if you have any questions. the installation is plug and play. they might install some software for wireless networking. if you have any questions about enabling wep or wpa, just post. good luck.

buy a wireless router that supports 802.11b/g -- you won't need things with speed booster and the like. this type of router should cost between 20 and 50. then buy a wireless pc-card that also supports 802.11b/g. this card should cost around 30.
make sure both devices support WPA or better yet, WPA2.
make sure your DSL modem is capable of connecting by ethernet -- some are USB only

you want a pc-card wireless card (as opposed to mpci, pci, or USB wireless cards). they will run anywhere from $10 to $80 depending on the type.
Tell us what you're trying to accomplish with the card and we can advise what to buy.
