How to DISABLE Automatic Connection to Wireless LAN
Hi,
I'm trying to find out how I can DISABLE automatic connection to my wireless LAN. I'm using the Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG adaptor on a Dell 6000. I've set up the connection to the Wireless LAN OK and saved a profile which loads and connects at login time; great.
However, I believe that using the wireless adaptor drains the battery, and I anyway DON'T want to automatically connect to the network (for security reasons). What I have been doing is using the FN+F2 keys to disable the radios every time I login... but how can I set it up so that this is the DEFAULT state at login ?
Thanks

Right-click on "My Network Places"
Select: Properties
Right-click on the wireless LAN icon
Select: Create Shortcut
Reply with 'yes' to put the shortcut on the Desktop
Close the "Network Connections" window
Right-click on the wireless desktop shortcut.
Select: Disable
If you have Bluetooth, FN+F2 will also disable the BT. Using a desktop shortcut will allow you to enable and disable the wireless nic as needed.

Esquire, my setup simply restores whatever the state was at shutdown/logoff. So, yes if the wireless was disabled at shutdown then it would reboot in this state. I guess I'm talking about the situation where wireless is enable, then I shut down.... I don't necessarily want to have the wireless connect automatically next time I (or anyone else) logs in.
Thanks.

(a) Disable the adaptor as per your instructions OR
(b) Disable the wireless signals (the FN+F2 approach)
Whilst your approach works, it isn't as easy as switching between the 2 states using the function keys. I guess I could try to assign short-cut keys to a .bat file or something to make it easier, but it may be getting too complicated for me. Is there a way to set the default state of the wireless signals to disabled as opposed to the whole adaptor? I could start hacking around with the registry, but I'm likely to screw everything up
Sorry if I'm being pedantic.... just trying to learn.
Thanks if anyone can help.

There is no menu (short of writing your own software to trap the FN-F2 keystroke) to select which wireless device that you want to enable or disable. I don't even use Fn-F2. When I want to turn off Bluetooth (because I don't want to see the blue LED while watching DVDs) I right-click on the BT icon on the system tray and disable it there.
I have desktop shortcuts for Wi-Fi, Firewire, and LAN. When I need one turned on, I right-click on it and select: Enable. It will stay that way even after the next boot up, until I change it. When not needed I right-click on it and select: Disable.
Wax on. Wax off. :smileyhappy:
