How to finish transferring documents and program files?

Question

I just got an XPS 410 and am in the process of transferring files from my old computer.   After making the horrible mistake of buying Laplink PCMover.  It's horrible and Laplink's support is the worst I have ever seen. The software gives you just about zero control over what gets transferred and where it goes. When I finally got someone online to 'talk' to (the priviledge of actually talking to someone on the phone will cost you $30/hour), the 'solution' was to buy another $130 of software (Laplink Gold or Filemover). The arrogance is unbelievable.   I called my local Comp USA looking for an alternative. I talked to a kid who told me to just hook up a cable between the NIC cards and voila! Network! No cost!   I got almost all of my files transferred until I got to the 'Documents and Settings', 'Program Files', and Windows folders. The problem is that apparently XP denies any way of sharing these 3 folders using Microsoft Network.   Is there a way to work around this or get the files and subfolders to my new PC over the network?   In the meantime, I'm trying the Files and Settings Transfer to see if I can get the files from these 3 folders transferred. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've spent a good part of the day trying to get this resolved now.   Thanks.

I happened to come across this which fixed the access and now I'm good to go!!

1. Disable simple file sharing: go to Control Panel, Folder Options, View tab, untick "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)".

2. Share "Program Files" folder (with a name with no spaces if you are going to share with PCs with Win9x): go to Windows Explorer, navigate to "Program Files" folder, right-click, Sharing and Security, tick "Share this folder", write a "Share name".

3. Add "Everyone" group name to Security (if not done yet): Security tab, Add, Advanced, Find Now, select Everyone, OK, OK.

Simple! And it works!

...and 'Everyone' has access to your Documents too.....
