I need an Ethernet adapter driver

I have a Dimension 4100 with Windows 2000.  I have only been able to connect to cable modem via USB cable; the Ethernet connection shows enabled but shows the LAN icon with the red X and Status: Network cable unplugged.

I have attempted unsuccesfully to download the driver for a Realtek 8139 Fast Ethernet Adapter.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled with the same negative result for what should be a pretty basic function.

Any guidance appreciated.

Are you sure that the network adapter physically installed in your computer is a Realtek 8139 Fast Ethernet Adapter?  I don't see any indication on the Dell Support site that any 4100s shipped with that make and model.    Does the network adapter show up in Device Manager when you expand the listings for Network Adapters?  Have you considered replacing the network adapter?  New PCI/10/100 can be found for less than $10 after rebate.

That would have been an after amrket addition to that system and not original equipment.  The Realtek NICs come with a CD that has the drivers and all the sites I try to hit for Realtek come back as empty.

Like Steve said, you will be time and money ahead by getting a new card from a well known comapny that has support.

Good points.  While I have not taken things apart and identified the device it does indicate as such in Device Manager.  I had downloaded a driver from the Realtek site but it did not work either.

The inexpensive new hardware solution sounds like the best next step.

Thanks.
