I need help

I need help understanding this wireless stuff.I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 lap top.I had them build into it the wireless card.I am planning to take this laptop on a motor trip across the country in Feb.Do I need anything more to take with me? Do I have to set anything eles up?Someone said something about a wireless hub switch, what is it and what do I do with it? Whoever explains it please talk to me like a 10 year old. When I went to school I was doing good to know something about a typewriter.
Thanks for any help

Note that the type of wireless card built into your computer has a range of about 300 feet under ideal conditions. It requires a nearby wireless network, such as would be provided by a wireless router connected to a broadband modem in your home or by such a router in a location that provides a wireless hot spot, such as at some coffee shops and airports. Many of these hotspots require you to pay a rather high price for use of their networks. If you want more universal wireless internet connection, you would need a different kind of wireless card and need to subscribe to a rather expensive and, at this time, very spotty coverage, such as Verizon Broadband.
