I need help

I have a Lattiitude Laptop. My system was working fine. Then I installed Windows XP. Now I can't connect to the internet. It tells me the modem is not working. However, when I check the modem under My Computer it states the modem is working fine. I used an authorized version of XP and it was registered. I don't know what to do. Can anyone help me?
