Incomplete wireless network set up

I just received my Inspiron 1525 and am attempting to set up my wireless network. I have a lynksys WRT54G v2.2 router that I have not used for about 4 years. Previously, I was using the router with a desktop and was unable to set up the wireless network after moving. Now I have a new computer and am wondering if I need a new router. I am using the installation CD that came with the router and am able to complete all steps until I have to connect my computer to the wireless router. After making the connection, the LED light that corresponds with the line (1-4) on the router is supposed to illuminate, but it doesn't. I have tried all of the line options. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what you are asking here.  Are you trying to set up a wireless network or a wired network.  The LEDs nexts for the Line output should only illuminate if there is a successful wired ethernet connection active on the ethernet port and should have nothing to do with the wireless connection.  Are you saying that after you attempt to set up a wireless connection, you lose the ethernet connection?    Please explain the steps you are taking to set up a wireless network.

I am attempting to set up a wireless network. The set up disk from my lynksys wireless router has me disconnect the ethernet cable from my computer and plug it into the back of the wireless router (the cable is now connecting the modem to the wireless router). Then I take another line and connect the computer to the wireless router. I have the option to plug this cord into 1 of 4 lines on my wireless router. Once plugged in the LED light on the router that corresponds with the line should illuminate. This does not happen, and all connections are in place and I have also tried another cord to make sure that wasn't the problem. Once the LED on the router is lit, the installation CD prompts me to hit next and the internet connection is checked. I cannot get past this step because the line LED does not illuminate, and there is no internet connection. If I remember correctly from the successful set up on a different computer, after internet connection is confirmed with all the connections in place, the line that connects the computer to the wireless router is removed and the wireless network is established.

Have you previously set up this router for wireless connection?  If so, there is no need to be running the setup CD - it only needs to be done once.

Still it is troubleing that you can't get an ethernet connection to the router.   Does this computer sucessfully connect to the modem by ethernet?   Do any other computers sucessfully connect to the router by ethernet or is it just this one.  If no computers can connect sucessfully to the router with the LED lighting up, then it suggests that either the router is bad or the cable is bad.

I have previously set up this router with another computer. The last time I had a successful connection with this router was almost 4 years ago. When we moved, I attempted to set up the wireless network again, but was unsuccessful. I did not investigate the problem because the wireless network was no longer necessary.

This computer does successfully connect to the modem by ethernet. I am not able to successfully connect to the router with any other computer. I was afraid it was a bad router since a different cable did not solve the problem, but I did not want to purchase another router without looking futher into it.

Have you tried hard resetting the router back to the default settings (usually by holding the power button down for 5 to 15 seconds)?  It could be something simple in the configuration that is preventing connections, and resetting the router would clear that.

Yes, I have tried resetting my router. No luck.
