indtall dsl software before wireless routersoftware?

I've got a quick question regarding seting up my wireless dell router..

do i need to install the software for my DSL modem first on my laptop before installing the software for my DELL router? (the laptop is also brandnew and has never been connected to my DSL modem)

I've tried to install the router software and it could not detect my internet connection (my ISP requires me to insert a username and password before connecting).

Any help is greatly appreciated!
