Initail setup/configuration needed to use WIFI?

Hi,

I am having the Dell Inspiron 700m

I am able to connect to a WIFI network and is getting a good signal strength, but when I tried to open an IE browser, I am getting a white page displaying some error msg.

Is there some setting or configuration I need to do in the IE browser or the WIFI network connection  before I can start using WIFI to suft the internet?

Thanks in advance!!

Do you own the network to which you are connected?  If the answer is no, it is likely to be out of your control.

The network is the WIFI network in my college...my other friends seem to be able to connect and use the network without setting up anything in their laptop.
I am the only one having this problem where my IE do not show up any result and only gives me an error msg page.

Thanks.

In that case, the network is likely to be protected so you can't simply connect to it without configuring your client to connect to this secured network.  You may want to enquire with the administrator at your college's IT deaprtment to see if there are additional network login steps you require to get you connected.

I have already tried asking the admin guys but they says that no network login are require to access the college's WIFI network. I have also asked my friends that are able to connect and all of them said that they didn't not applied for any network login access from the college, they can just easily get connected and able to access all the websites without getting an error msg page.

Thanks.

1.  I presume you have no problem with connecting to the college network using a LAN cable, correct?

2.  Try disabling your firewall to see if it helps.

3.  Open Command Prompt and enter IPCONFIG /ALL and see if your network IP, DNS, and Default Gateway assignments are correct.

Yup...everything is okie using the LAN network.

Already tried disabling the firewall but still give the same problem.

After I prompt the IPCONFIG/ALL, how do i know whether my IP/DSN/Gateway assignments are correct? Do i make a comparision with my firend's IP/DSN/Gateway assignments and change mine to follow them? If so, how do i get about changing all those assignments?

Thanks.

IP address is unique so yours will be similar but not be exactly the same.  DNS and Default Gateway should be the same.

In fact, since your LAN connection works, you can make a comparison on the above information between your wireless and wired connections.

the default gateway should match with the one on your friends computer.
are you able to ping websites from cmd prompt??
for a rapid response you can try emailing me at techsupport4free@gmail.com

Thanks to esquire and techsupport4free for all your help...
techsupport4free,
I am able to ping and get a respond from websites using the cmd prompt...everything seems to be fine with the WIFI network (able to connect, getting a strong signal, etc) it is just that my IE do not return any result and is giving me an error msg page instead :smileysad:

I was thinking that maybe it has something to do with my IE browser configuration that do match with WIFI connection setting?? Is there such a thing??? The IE seems to be working fine if I am connected to the college's LAN network and my broadband connection at home.
And let say that my default gateway do not match (I am currently on a 1 week sem break, can't check on it till next week)...how do I change it then??
Thanks.
