Inspiron 1150 Network

Hi,

I have lost connectivity to my home network trhough either wireless or LAN. The message says limited connectivity only. It cannot get an ip address.

I had upgraded to SP2 but this was not the cause. the network was ok for several weeks after I installed sp2. I have also updated all drivers, etc.

In an atempt to rule out sp2 I uninstalled sp2, but this made no difference.

I have run a winsock fix programme (with sp2 un-installed, still) and this has not worked.

Other computers on my network are OK. I have two desktops (one with xp sp2 and one with ME )connected (wired) to a 5 port switch. On the swicth also I have a Zoom adsl router/firewall and belkin wireless access point. My dell inspiron has worked successfuly for many months on the wireless connection.

As I say, I am now unable to obtain a connection.

When I run "repair" I get an error reniewing ip address.

Current status is that I am using the Inspiron with SP2 removed. I cannot re-install sp2, anyhow, as I cannot get access to windows update on the Inspiron!

Does anyone know a solution?

Well if you want SP2, use your other PC and have MS send you the CD for free. At what range are you using the 1150 to connect to the network? I know when I get just a few feet out of range, the IP renewal is the first to go.

Ben,

Thanks for your response. This is not a wireless issue. I cannot get a connection to my network at any range. I am also getting exactly the same with the LAN connection. My current plan is to re-insatll SP2 and see if that cures the problem. If it does not I guess I will need to rebuild the machine. I do not want to do this!!

My motivation is not to have SP2 but to have my notebook talking to my network.

Am currently downloading SP2 on a phone line to the Inspiron, but it is painful. May be faster to get Microsoft to send a CD!

Regards,

Chris

cgproudfoot,

Almost without exception symptoms affecting multiple network adapters turn out to be a Winsock 2 "layered service provider" problem. Did you try WinsockXPFix and also lspfix?   This article describes SP2's native feature for correcting LSP problems, and also describes how to reset TCP networking on XP.

Jim,

Thanks. Have now tried everything other than reset of winsock catalogue. Stilll same problem. Message is "This conection has limited or no connectivity". If I try and do an ipconfig /release and /renew I am told cannot get an ip addres. This is for both wireless and LAN.  I looked at the winsock catalogue. There are a number of entries in association with NWlink. Would these be wiped out if I did a reset? I do not know what they are.

My dial-up on the noteboook is working OK. I downloaded XP SP2 yesterday (it took nearly 5 hours!). So internet access on the machine (via dial up) is OK. I just cannot get it to talk to my network or the internet through my ADSL router. I have used the machine on the newtork fro several months, so this is a recent problem.

Could this be a router issue? I tend to back away from this as two other computers on the network are working fine.

Any ideas, anyone?

Chris

Chris,

"NWlink" is a component that's installed if the "IPX/SPX-Compatible Transport" protocol is installed. It's commonest use is to support connections to Netware servers, but it is sometimes suggested as a security measure for LANS that are also connected to the Internet, since IPX/SPX can't be routed over the TCP/IP-based Internet. Some LAN-based games also need IPX/SPX installed.

Are there entries for "NWLink" in the connection properties for either adapter? If so, they should be removed, unless there's some reason you need IPX/SPX. Here's an  illustration showing how to remove them.

IPX/SPX is supported in the Winsock 2 bindings, so removing it would at least simplify things, and might even clear up the problem.

Hi,

the two protocols I have installed are:

Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and

ARGIS Protocol (IEEE 802.1x)v2.3.1.7

There is also a QoS packet Sceduler, Client for Microsoft Windows and File and Printer sharing.

Do any of these need NWlink? If not I do not know how NWlink references got into teh Winsock catalogue.

Chris,

If NWLink is not listed in the network bindings, those entries are probably placed in the registry by default. I've checked my Win2K laptop for them, and didn't find any references to NWLink except for several CLSIDs that included an "NWLink Configuration Notify Object" as the default value under HKLM\Software\Classes. Nothing was found under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2. Since this isn't an XP system, that may not mean anything.

What tool are you referring to for resetting the winsock catalogue?

(edit) Something else we need to check is the state of the DHCP client on the system. If you open a cmd.exe window (Start/Run cmd.exe), and in the window that opens, type ipconfig /all, what IP addresses are listed for the adapters? If they begin with 169.254, the DHCP client is running but is unable to obtain an IP address. If instead the listed IP addresses are 0.0.0.0, the DHCP client may not be running. In that case, check the status of the DHCP client service by running "services.msc" via Start/Run. The DHCP client should be set to "Automatic" startup type, and its status should be "Started". If it's not running, try to start it by right-clicking on the entry, and selecting "Start". If the client does not start, check the "System" event log for errors or warnings reported for "Dhcp". If any recent ones are found, report the error message by selecting all the text in the "description" box and pasting the text into a reply.

Any security on the network?

Just thought I would close this off. Over the weeks I have tried Winsock fix, TCP/IP reset, reloading SP2 from an internet down load (using a phone link as I could not get onto my Network for ADSL!!). NONE OF THESE WORKED.

I have fixed the problem by reloading SP2 from a Microsoft Service Pack 2 CD.
