Inspiron 1300/Wireless Connection Problem

I'm pretty new to PC's which doesn't help (have used Mac's for ages). I have an Inspiron 1300, D-Link DI-524 router, & internet service with Telewest (I'm in the UK). I managed to get online with my Broadband connection, then tried to set up the router. Followed the instructions - connected the router to the mains, connected it to my PC, connected it to my modem, typed in what I was asked to, got told everything was ok  the router was restarting, could access the internet with everything still connected. I have no idea what to do next: disconnect the PC from the router/restart PC/reset modem/disable broadband connection on Network Connections/ etc etc. If I try enabling the wireless connection I get the message that it cannot renew the IP Address, but I have know idea what to do to fix it. My router does show up on available connections, but that's all.
Has anyone got the patience to help a Brit in distress?

I've had enough of this thing. Printed off umpteen pages but still no joy. I find now, I get a message that wireless networks are available, but when I click on the icon, none are displayed. Fed up, cheesed off & everything else. Any suggestions? Do you know if Dell make service calls to sort out ths type of thing? I'm beginning to wonder why on earth I bought the darned router in the first place.

I'm really sorry about your problem. Did you name the wireless network (SSID)? And if you go into the configuration of the router is it set to broadcast? Otherwise lets try to set it up using windows wireless zero config. But first look at those issues first and then maybe I can talk (write) you through some steps. IM might help for this.

That's a great start!!!! Check that box and then lets setup your network. You will need to add it if you don't already see it in the list of available networks

Yes, I refreshed the list & still no networks showing even tho the little message in the bottom right of the screen says there are. Yes, the lights were working. They are labelled Power/Status/WAN/WLAN1/2/3/4.
I've noticed when I first tried setting it up I eventually got my router showing up on the available routers. Now none show up. Any idea if I can reset the settings back to default on the PC then I can well & truly start from square one?
I'm close to tears.

Yes, my network has a name. I still see it if I dabble in the Connection Wizzard. I'm silly - have a cold so called it sniffy. Can't see any option for broadcast. Where is the windows wireless zero confg thing & what is it? Do you mean Instant Messenger? Wish you lived in Cheltenham!

Just to play the devils advocate here. When you did not see any networks did you refresh the list? (upper left hand corner) It may show up then. Are the lights working? Are they blinking showing activity? And what exactly are the lights labeled? Inernet? LAN? Wireless maybe? Also, it may be D-Link that you will have to call as it seems it's the router that is making you "cheesed off" : ) Trust me, once you get this up and running you'll forget all about this and love having the wireless.

If this is any help, I see this in the 'Choose a wireless network' box.... Windows cannot configure his wireless connection. If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that software.
I don't think I got that the other day when I could see my & other wireless's available.
Maybe if I could start from scratch it might help.

It may be automatic but you have to start it. It should say "started" in the status. If not go up to the top left and click on "start"

Don't have Admin Tools. Got: Appearance & Themes/Network & Internet Connections/Add or Remove Programs/Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices,/Performance & Maintenance/Printers and Other Hardware/User Accounts/Date, Time....../Accessibility Options/Security Centre.

Sniify?? LOL Yes that would be easier if I wasn't across the pond so to speak, but Instant Messenger might help. First though, the zero wireless config is.........

Go to your control panel again, click on your network connections, then right click on your wireless connection then go to properties. You will see a "wireless networks" tab at the top, select that. Next click on the "use windows to configure my wireless network settings"

Next if you do not see your network, try one last time to "view your wireless networks" button. If you still do not see it, you will need to add it using the add button at the bottom. Type in "sniffy" in the SSID and I am assuming you have open authentication and WEP data encryption? They say okay and close this box

By the way - when I can' get it to work I unplug the router & put it back in the box. Then I go back to my broadband connection. Should I leave sniffy connected?

This has intrigued me when trying to fathom it out before. My Dell info says to look for the Wireless Networks tab but I don't have one. I only have General & Advanced. Don't have a dunce tab either.

I did a search, found Wireless Zero Config. It's set to Automatic. Still only got General & Advanced.
