Inspiron 1300/Wireless Connection Problem

I'm pretty new to PC's which doesn't help (have used Mac's for ages). I have an Inspiron 1300, D-Link DI-524 router, & internet service with Telewest (I'm in the UK). I managed to get online with my Broadband connection, then tried to set up the router. Followed the instructions - connected the router to the mains, connected it to my PC, connected it to my modem, typed in what I was asked to, got told everything was ok  the router was restarting, could access the internet with everything still connected. I have no idea what to do next: disconnect the PC from the router/restart PC/reset modem/disable broadband connection on Network Connections/ etc etc. If I try enabling the wireless connection I get the message that it cannot renew the IP Address, but I have know idea what to do to fix it. My router does show up on available connections, but that's all.
Has anyone got the patience to help a Brit in distress?

That's okay. If you don't have the wireless tab, then you need to start the control panel again, click on administrative tools then services. Scroll down to the "wireless Zero Configuration" service and start it. Then make sure it is set to "Automatic" in the startup type. You should then see the wireless networks tab............hanging in there?

Dunno if you got my message. I've since had enough for the day & am switching off. Now have SNIFFY showing in the Wireless Networks tab. Tomorrow after work I'll get SNIFFY connected again. email me if you got my message, then I can email you tomorrow.

It should say "started" in the status colum. If it does, then check to see if you have your wireless networks tab available.

This thread is getting very long if you need more help you can email me. Just click on the "who's on line" at the top and then find wlanman4 on about the 5th page and click on it for my email address K? It might be easier

10 4. Slight progress. Now says:    Stop the Service   &   Restart the Service.

Couldn't see your email addy so sent you an instant message, Can we put email addys on here? I had an idea. I have a boffin colleague at work. I'll ask Chris if he can take PC & SNIFFY to his place & configure it there if all else fails here. I'll try again at home tonite. Back then. Must be the configuration on PC that needs tweaking. Eyes down tonite.

Well, shiver me timbers! No cable, online, but I RESET SNIFFY before I had another go this evening. I thought as reset him he's lost the name, password etc. I'm chuffed but puzzled.
I'll stay online for a couple of hours - email me if you dare!
