Inspiron 4000 Networking

I'd like to connect to my home's 802.11b 2,4Ghz network.

I have an Inspiron 4000, running Windows 2000. It has a 56k modem only.

What is my best wireless option (and what would work, period)?

A) Replace the modem with a MiniPCI dual modem and use a jumper cable to the interface board.

B) There are couple of empty slots on the left side with what looks like about 66 pins. Would a Wireless PCMCIA card fit there?

In both cases, what else would I need to do to connect? This is an old notebook that's never been on the Internet.

a pcmcia wireless card would probably be easiest!

Do you think those slots on the left are active on a 4000? Would a PCMCIA card definitely fit there?

I'm not necessarily interested in the easiest solution. I want what's best for connectivity to a wireless network. I'm comfortable opening up the memory bay and changing out the modem card. Probably not that interested in soldering or messing with the mother board.

I use a netgear wg511 pcmcia wireless card in my 4100 & it works problem free.

I have tried both internal and PCMCIA wireless with my 4000 and I use the PCMCIA card because of coverage.  Get the same brand/generation as the wireless access point or router you have or will be getting.  Also, if you want to change the internal modem to the modem/NIC combo card, look on ebay for a 3COM 3CN3AC1556 (or B) and replace the modem only card.
