Inspiron 5100, can't access internet.
Hey everyone. So I am having a heck of a time with this notebook. I have installed the drivers for the integrated ethernet controller but can't get on the net for some reason. I have cable internet for my PC (which I am using right now) and I pretty much plug it in to the ethernet card and start surfing. For whatever reason the inspiron won't get on the net.
When I plug the ethernet cable in it says "local area network connected" and I can see the icon in the systray is animated, but still no internet. It is beyond me why it doesn't work. The device works, I know my internet works, so why can't I just plug it in and go? I've been working on PC's for years and I'm just stumped on this one.

If you are not using a router, but plugging directly into the cable modem, you need to reset the modem every time you change the device connected to it. To do this, turn off the computer and the cable modem. Wait 5 minutes. Turn on the cable modem first. Wait another 5 minutes, then turn on the computer connected to the modem. This has to be done everytime you change the device connected to the modem in order to change the MAC address that is registered in the modem.
