Inspiron 5100 wired/wireless network connection problems

Question

I have an Inspiron 5100 running WinXP Home SP2 and am having wireless and wired networking problems.  Started a few weeks ago intermittently, when I noticed wireless card had Excellent signal strength but I was getting a 'Limited or no connectivity' error.  So I tried direct wired Ethernet connection to the router and received the same error on the laptop's internal Broadcom NIC.  I also have a desktop PC with wired and wireless NICs and am able to connect just fine with it.  I confirmed it's not a router port or cat-5 cable problem b/c when I swapped I still have same results; desktop works everytime and laptop doesn't.    I haven't loaded any new software, turned off Windows firewall and removed McAfee firewall to ensure that wasn't the cause.  I have the router setup to perform DHCP (ip range of 192.168.0.100-199), so I did an ipconfig on the laptop's wired and wireless NICs and both times the result was a laptop 'autoconfiguration ip address: 169.2545.9.163'.  That doesn't seem right to me, but not sure.  I'm not computer illiterate, but I'm at my wits end.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention I tried pinging the router from the laptop and it times out every time.

Try downloading and running winsockfix for Windows XP from the Here and if that doesn't work try lspfix from Here. Steve

Even if you have disabled the windows firewall when you installed the new firewall go to the windows firewall settings and under advanced untick the wy-fi check box
