inspiron 5160 internet problems
i just got a 5160 with both a wirless and standard ethernet
im not using the wirless, im trying to plug straight into my dsl modem
when i plug it into my desktop everything is fine, so i assume the cable is good and the connection is good
when i plug it into my inspiron i get activity on the card, but i can not seem to pull up webpages
i also get page cannot be displayed (dns error, etc)
it was working the 1st day i got it (last friday)
as of sunday it decided to stop
any ideas?

runblip,
When you switch Ethernet connections to a cable modem, you'll need to power the cable modem off before connecting the other machine. That's because cable systems "register" the Ethernet address of the connecting device, and won't allow another Ethernet address to access the cable system's network until the information regarding the previous device has been cleared out by turning off the cable modem for several minutes.
If you want both your desktop and your 5160 to be able to share the cable connection, you'll need to purchase a broadband router. HomeNetHelp.com has an excellent tutorial about connection sharing using a broadband router.

Can you post the output from "ipconfig /all" from the laptop? To do this, open a cmd.exe window (Start/Run cmd.exe). In the window that opens, type ipconfig /all. Then, with the left mouse button held down, drag the cursor across all the output produced by "ipconfig /all". Then click on the right mouse button. That will place the output in the Windows clipboard. Then reply to this message, and paste the output into the reply.
That information will tell us whether the laptop is receiving a proper IP address, subnet mask, gateway address, and DNS server address.
