Inspiron 6000 with wireless issues

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me.

Yesterday my wireless connection started having some problems.  I have an Inspiron 6000 notebook, running XP Home SP2 and a Belkin 54 G wireless router that I have used for several years.  My household also has two other dell notebooks, that aren't having any wireless issues. I haven't installed any new software/programs, etc. in several weeks and the software that I did install was recommended by Bugbatter in the Malware Removal forum when I had a trojan (vundo) several (about 3) weeks ago, which she helped me remove.  The notebook has been fine since than -- I've been running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, which hasn't found anything.

My notebook is having several different symptoms:

1. I can always "see" the available network, with full signal strength, but the notebook won't connect to it.  It says "waiting for network..." for a very long time, and then says "Not Connected". Yet the button in the in lower right hand corner will say “Disconnect” rather than “Connect”

2.  Sometimes, when it says "Not Connected", it really will connect, even though the icon in the Systray has the red "X" with it.  But I can get on the internet -- but usually very briefly.  Then the connection is lost.

3. When I use the "hard line" (LAN cable) to the same router, I have no problem.

I have moved to several areas in the house, including right next to the router, yet I still get the same results, so I'm pretty sure that it's not a physical obstacle interfering with the signal.

I know next-to-nothing about wireless networking, so I'm really hoping that someone can help me here.  I'm going nuts with this issue.

Thanks so much.
