Inspiron 600m Hyperterminal Problem

Question

Okay so here's the story.   We have purchased a Dell Inspiron 600m and reformatted the hard drive. Now the modem does not initialize when the system restarts. If you go to Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options -> Modems tab -> click Properties -> Diagnostics tab -> click on view log, there should be a log of your modem's initialization when the system starts. But there is none now. The same thing happens with a Dell Dimension 2400 & 3000 after you reformat. But when you get the system fresh in from Dell it works just fine. Once reformatted it stops working. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Dell of course has no idea and I had to explain how to test this scenario to them and was supposed to get back to me with a 'call back' but of course that never happened. $169 down the drain for tech support. So if anyone has any idea how to solve this problem, PLEASE!!!! let me know. Thanks.

What's the modem's name? Is the Append to Log check box checked next to the View Log button? Perhaps the newer driver erases the log on reboot.

It is a conexant D480 MDC V.9x internal modem built on to the laptop. It doesn't matter if the append log is checked, I have tried it both ways. When it reboots it does erase what was previously in the log but it should rewrite a new one. But the log isn't really what I'm interested in, the log is just a sign to tell me that the modem isn't initializing. The modem worked just fine before we reformatted. But once reformatted, it stopped working.
