inspiron 6400 wireless connection problem

i am having problems connecting to my wireless linksys wrg 54 router.... i sort of think the problem is that after intel pro configs and turns the green color, i then get a question mark- may have trouble connecting to interent,  and it states it cannot get a  ip address.. i tried to start from scratch restoring computer to as it came from factory, ,but my network configuration seems to always be there.. i also forgot the phase password for encription, but i type what i think is the password, and it seems to accept it... how do i solve my problem and connect to the internet?? i also used the wrg 54 cdrom to connect, but i always get this ip address problem.////????

If you are not entering the correct encryption password, you would get the behavior you describe.  Since you seem to be indicating that you are not sure of the password, why not log onto the router from a computer that has a working connection and check the encryption password.

volcano 11

thanks, that did the trick. i went into the routers setup page, and manually put in a ssid name. i was then able to use linksys netuse to set up the connection..i hate to say it, but i need to spend more time on networking, probably my weakest area of what computer knowledge i have..later ronss

It is good to see that it is working.

I too had problems with the same router at home with my Inspiron 6400..drops etc. Tried going into the settings and changing the SSID and other things, still wouldn't work.

There are new updated drivers for the intel3945 card. Since I updated my drivers I haven't had any problem since.

No not a firmware update but new drivers...

I got my laptop 2 1/2 weeks ago, turned it on and connected to my WRT54G router, worked like a charm after putting in SSID and my key as I run WPA.

As I was downloading Microsoft updates, it crashed ( wireless card ) ...tried everything to fix it, turning radio on/off, and it wouldn't work right, as the drivers seemed not to like continuous downloads. Seems Dell ships without the latest drivers, as these new ones are dated June 06, which are available here...

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=InspironI6400/E1505&os=WW1&osl=EN

Key fixes/enhancements:
* Corrects 802.1x authentication problem with specific Proxim access points
* Corrects potential suspend issue if wake capabilities are not provided to OS.
* Corrects pop-up behavior preventing timer based standby/hibernate.
* Corrects radio disable problem on specific Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection cards when performing downloads

Once I installed the drivers listed under Network for the Intel Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection it solved all of my problems.

If it is working don't do anything but if you start to encouter some, there is an update to fix it.

There is an even newer driver available today...

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R129985&SystemID=InspironI6400/E1505&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=9540&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=3&formatcnt=1&libid=5&fileid=173251

These are the new drivers which correct the security problem that Intel outlined earlier.
