Inspiron 8100 internal modem driver

Hi
A million appologises if this has been posted before but I've searched and cannot find the answer. I have refurbished an Inspiron 8100 for my father-in-law and installed XP pro. Everything works fine except the internal modem. I've set up his dial up service but it won't dial out. There is no noise from the modem. Have physically checked to make sure there is one fitted and there is. In device manager it clearly states it's there, Lucent Modem. But I can't work out why it won't dial out. Any ideas what the problem could be? Is there a driver that needs installing seperately from the XP set up? If so could someone please do me a "click here" link or something cos i cannot find it in the downloads section. If the modem is faulty, can they be replaced? Have tried to convice him to go broadband but he won't ! I have had the machine running on my BB conection for updates and works flawlessley.
Thanks in anticaption of some help.

Hi,

Does device manager show it working ? The modem is replacable, it is under the small door underneath. It may also have a network card with it. The miniPCI card could be either or both.

Ok cheers for the info re the spare plug ! I'll have another look at the card and check to see if there are any bent pins or obvious damage. Barring that  I'll have to try a new one in and see what happens. Why he won't agree to having broadband on it instead is beyond me. Would save me a load of grief ! Anyhow, cheers for the help.

Hi,

The extra cable is for the network which you dont have. It could be a faulty card, or the cable and socket. ( which is a seperate assembly ). It may be waiting for Dial-tone, which it doesnt have so wont Dial. Look for bent pins in the socket.

Hi

Yeah device manager says it's enabled and working properly......but clearly it isn't ! I've checked under the flap and there's a card there with one wire attached via a small 2 pin plug and another plug next to it not connected to anything with about 8 pins in it. Theres no where for this plug to connect to on the card. Was wondering now if this plug should be connected to something in the palm rest by the speakers perhaps?? There's no other cards in pcmcia slots, just the dust blanks. I'm puzzled as to why it won't even attempt to dial out. I spose the only thing to do is get a new one off the bay and try it and see if it a faulty card after all. Unless anyone knows where this spare multi plug "should" be sitting !!
