Inspiron E1705 - Unable to connect

Have just taken delivery of new E1705 and also purchased new wireless router from my ISP.
The router has been set-up on my desktop and is working ok. I get a strong signal on my laptop but when I try to connect I receive an  "unable to connect". On the advice of my ISP no security settings have yet been applied on the router. ISP customer service suggests that the laptop may need further setting up.
Since I am new to wifi can anyone help me in setting up the system, my Dell system is 'as received ' and has not yet been connected to the internet.

If you open Network Connections, right click on your wireless network connection, and select "Veiw available wireless networks", does you wireless network show up there?

dont use the intel proset to connect to wireless internet. right click on the intel proset icon in the bottom right hand corner and click on the option that says "let windows manage wifi". you will get the popup box that says "wireless networks detected. do you want to connect to it?" click on yes and it will find your router. click on your router name and click on connect. you MAY be prompted for the network key that is provided by your ISP. :) .. .let us know if it fixed the issue.

I had the computer checked by the Dell agent and they relaoded the software and that seemed to clear the problem. I also found a set-up problem on the wireless modem.
All is now ok.

I'm having the same problem with my e1505. What software did the Dell guy reinstall?
