Inspiron XPS modem not recognized

Question

Hi all,   I have an Inspiron XPS that is about 4 months old.  I formatted the partition for windows and reloaded XP professional vice XP home.  Everything is fine except my modem is unrecognized by the software disk that came with the system.  All other hardware drivers installed perfectly.  I installed the modem help software and ran it.  It, like the driver install program for communications, said that the internal modem installed in my computer is not from Dell.  I need to pull it out and put in the original modem.  I have never opened the case.  There are no other modems or for that matter any other hardware at all attached to the computer including USB devices, 1394 devices or pcmcia items.  The computer realizes there is a modem there but it is unsupported by dell according to both modem drivers and modem helper.  The modem is the original that was installed when purchased and was used perfectly for about 3 months.  The only other piece of the puzzle I can add is the drivers are Broadcom drivers and I am not sure but I think the modem may have been a conexant, although I am really unsure about that.  Dell's website lists on configuration that it is a Broadcom that comes with the XPS.  I have tried installing the drivers provided from menu driven programs, by raw inf file etc.  All says that is not the right modem.  I could not find an alternate modem from Dell on that model of computer.  Thanks for any support.
