Installing Roadrunner cable modem

I have been using my Roadrunner connection and modem on my Sony Vaio notebook for about a year with no problems. I now want to use it on my desktop instead; Dell Dimension L800r, Windows ME. I am basically computer illiterate so excuse me if I give irrelevant information.  There is no ethernet port on the Dell so I have connected it to the modem with a USB cable.  During installation, I get a message saying that I need a network adapter or that I need to run the driver installation cd that came with my adapter. Is a network adapter hardware? With my notebook, I just had to connect the modem and run the installation CD that came with the modem from the cable company. I have spent a lot of time on the phone with Roadrunner tech help; following their instructions etc., but they don't know what the problem is.  Do I need to install something?  Attach something? Apparently the computer does not detect a driver for the adapter?  I'm so confused now that I'm not sure what I'm even talking about. Please help!

Thanks, stevie2u

Yes, a network adapter is hardware, they can be found at any computer store, such as Best Buy.Open up your computer case and install the adapter in a available pci slot. Run the installation cd to install the drivers.

stevie2u,

It sounds like have a cable modem that can connect either through an ethernet connection or through a USB connection.  It further sounds like you used to connect with an ethernet cable and that you now want to connect with the USB cable to a computer that does not have an ethernet adapter.  If this is the case, you will need to first install the software for the USB connection, before physically connecting the computer to the cable modem with the USB cable. Further, before you make the connection, and you should reset the cable modem by turning it off compleletly, turning it on, and then waiting about five minutes before starting the computer.

Your Road Runner provider should be consulted for help before changing computer setup. My RR does not support USB, even though the modem does.
