You mention "dial-up" and then refer to "broadband".  These are two different Internet connection types.  "Dial-up" is using the internal "datamodem" and connecting via the analog (voice) telephone line.

Broadband usually refers to either DSL or Cable, "High Speed" internet connection.

One issue, that I've experienced with a couple of customers.  With a new or relatively new and fast PC, if you have the DSL (or Cable) modem powered off and then power it on at the same time as the PC, the PC may boot up before the DSL or Cable modem is "ready" and it will result in not connecting.

The best thing is to leave the modem powered on all the time.  If you want to power it off, then power on the modem first and let it sync up before you boot the PC, then it should automatically connect.
