Hi mjgeuze,

I have a D-Link DIR-655/Intel wireless card also.  I have really good reception with it.  However, I only hook up at 54 mps and my security says wep.  How do you change to settings to get higher security/higher speed.  Thanks for your help.

Higher than 54Mbit/s speeds with a 4965AGN require that the security is set to WPA/WPA2 with AES encryption. WEP encryption does not support speeds above 54mbit/s.

To change these settings of your router, login to your router via a WIRED connection and change the wireless settings.

How to do this exactly, please check your manual.

If you have never changed any settings in device manager for your Intel 4965AGN, you probably do not need to do anything there.

After you have made the changes on the router, you will probably not able to connect to the router.

Search for available wireless networks, choose your router and enter the WPA/WPA2 passphrase you also entered in the router.

That is it in a nutshell

Thanks..............worked perfect as per your instructions.  Now I am getting 130 Mbps wireless and it appears to be faster than my wired LAN.

Twostep55,

Are you running Vista?

If so, can you download something big from another machine in your network (if you have a network present) and tell me if you experience the same problems I have?

I have a mixed network. But it does not matter whether I try to download from another wireless computer or from the wired computer. In both cases it starts to hang.

So I think there is a problem with my wireless 4965AGN card.

What is the hardware revision/firmware version of your router? That is probably the only other difference between our setups that may matter. (Login to the router to get this info).

I have hardware revision A3 and firmware 1.11EU.

New M1530 with Vista.  Copied a 259 MB file of pictures from my desktop, pasted to my Laptop.  No problems at all.  However, I am only wireless on my laptop.  From the router, I am wired to both my desktops.  Not sure if you are totally wireless, or combination of wired/wireless.

This started happening on my M1530 as well after changing from 32-bit Vista to 64-bit 2008 Server. I've tried every driver i could think of (currently 11.1.1.22) - and copying files over Microsoft Network Shares -will- disable the radio on the 4965. This is very easy to reproduce - just copy something more than a gigabyte-file and it will disable itself. Any radio switch or FN-keypresses won't work. This does not occur if you're using the wired connection.

After reading this thread i tried to transfer files through the FTP protocol and voila, it's going rock steady at ~7mbyte/sec.

However, I must point out that this does not only occur using the DIR-655. (My DIR-655 config is:

  Wireless LAN

Wireless Radio : Enabled

WISH : Active

MAC Address :---

Network Name (SSID) :---

Channel : 11

Security Mode : WPA/WPA2 - Personal <- (This is using AES Cipher)

Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Configured

(( HardwareA2 Firmware 1.11EU))

)

It also happens using WEP (Vs Gigabyte xxx(forget the model) 802.11g ADSL2 router/modem. I have another laptop on the same DIR-655 wireless network (Inspiron 6000) - that does not have this problem - even while copying files over Microsoft shares.

Another thing to point out is that I haven't had this problem using the factory installed 32-bit Vista - atleast not at a noticeable degree. It seems the 64-bit drivers are much more prone to this error.

I also have a desktop running Vista with a wireless-n connection (D-Link DWA-556) that has no problem with the DIR-655. I presume that the Inspiron 6000 does not have an Intel4965AGN card inside?

It really looks like a problem of the Intel4965AGN.

The problem with the Intel 4965AGN in combination with the D-LINK DIR-655 was a defect Intel 4965AGN card. After I replaced it with another Intel 4965AGN mini-PCIe card my problems in 11n-mode were gone and now I have nice speed improvements over 11g-mode.
