Intel My WiFi Technology Affecting Internet Connection

Hi everyone,

I just had a new Xfinity router/modem installed at my house yesterday.  Although I can connect to the network and my laptop says I have access and an excellent connection, I cannot pull up any web pages.  I have not had this problem with any other wireless networks and all of my other devices (iPhone, roommates' computers, etc) work on this network.  Also, my ethernet works just fine.

However, I was fooling around with my settings and I realized that when I enable My WiFi Technology, I have a normal, strong connection.  It was my understanding that this is not supposed to affect my own connection to the network.  I'm kind of stumped. I'm not sure if this means that one of my drivers is out of date.

I am using an Inspiron 5110 and running Windows 7.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,

Which Intel wireless card are you running in your system, and which version of the driver is currently installed.  If you check the downloads page for the 5110, under Networking category, it has the most recent drivers for the system.

Most of those drivers appear to be from late 2013 or early 2014.   If you don't have the most up to date driver on your system, for your card, you may want to see if updating will help.  I'm not sure that the Intel My Wifi software / tech would affect your actual network connection.   There may also be a newer driver on the Intel downloads pages but not sure until I know what version you currently have on the system.

I assume, since you just got the Xfinity router yesterday that the system wasn't having problems with the My Wifi software prior to the router installation?   Do you have security settings set up on the router?  What happens to your connection if you remove those settings?  (Remember to restore them after testing).

Let me know which Intel card you have and the driver version number and I'll see what I can find to help you.

Todd,

Thanks so much for the response, I really appreciate it! Again, I don't know if the My WiFi is the cause, but for some reason, I can only upload web pages 1/20 times without it, but my internet seems normal with it enabled.

I'm not great with computers, but I think this is it: Wireless-N 1030. And the version is 14.0.1.2  And yes, I've never really set up hotspots through that specific program, so I've never had issues.  I've never had issues with connecting to WiFi in general either.

Actually, as I'm typing this, I logged on to the router and fooled around with the security settings.  I switched it from (TKIP/AES) to just (TKIP) and my laptop has worked very well so far.

Thanks again,

David

Hi David,

It could be that the security settings were conflicting with your network connection, either due to the driver version or the settings / firmware on the Xfinity router.  If it's working so far let's not change anything else and see how it does over the weekend.
