Intel pro Network Adapter does not detect ethernet cable

I am using a dsl router and must connect with a usb cable because it will not detect ethernet on the router. I have connected with another pc and ethernet cable works so the router is ok. I checked in device manager and it is working properly and the driver is up to date. Also I ran a test on the device by using the hardware tests with F12 at startup. I am running XP on a Dimension E310 What else can I do to determine the problem?

Do the link lights on the modem and next to the ethernet port on the computer light up when the cable is connected and both devices are powered on?  If not, does wiggling the cable or pushing it in result in lighting the link lights.   If not, and your are sure the cable is not defective, then it sounds like a bad RJ45 connector in the ethernet port on the E310.  You will have to call Dell Tech Support for service.
