The only "fix" that I've found to this is to go to Network Connections->Right click on your wireless icon->Repair. Unfortunately this is not a permanent solution because you'll have to do it every time you reboot. If anyone found a permanent fix, PLEASE post it. I have never been able to connect using Windows Wifi Management. Good luck.

Okay, I found a solution that might be a permanent fix. Here's the link. It's the update for WPA2 for Windows XP. Download, install and restart. BTW, I'm using Windows Wifi Management and it actually works. I'm not going to mess with Intel Proset, I've had too many problems with it. Good luck!

Half Moon Bay. Thanks for the advice. I appreciate your response but unfortunately it didn't work. The proset 'trouble shooter has a manual diagnostic that runs a series of tests. It keeps failing the 'association test' and , despite acting on the fixes suggested by the trouble shooter guide, it still doesn't work. So I'll keep using Windows too. There are a lot of proset queries on the message board. I hope Dell and Intel are reading them cos it ain't good enough.

More info.
I downloaded the file suggested by Halfmoonbay.

Opened and installed the file

Tried to reconnect using pro set. Didn't work

I went to the control panel.

Opened Network connections
Right clicked on the wireless connection (which also showed that proset was managing the connection)

Selected and ran repair

rebooted the computer.

It worked.
Rebooted again to see if it still worked. It does

so far so good.

More Info 2

Problem applying profile issue has reappeared.

As Halfmoonbay pointed out, you can re-establish the pro set wireless connection each
time by going opening the network connections icon in control panel, right clicking and selecting 'repair' but at this stage it's not a permanent fix. Any more thoughts out there?

Another update.
Downloaded the following from Microsoft.

WindowsXP-KB914440-v12-x86-ENU

After installing, rebooting and 'repairing'(as above) this seems to have fixed the problem.

My Intel PROSet wireless was working well until I downloaded and installed the most recent version from the Drivers & Downloads site:

Release Title: Network: Intel (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN, Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection, Driver, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows XP x64, Multi Language, Multi System, v.11.5.0.0 (TIC148234), A13
Release Date: 11/19/2007

Then I got the 'Problem applying profile' message and could no longer connect to wireless networks that had security turned on. I went through a chat session but no joy: the support technician got me connected by turning off PROSet and letting Windows manage the wireless connections.

Then I searched around on the Intel support site and found the URL below. I followed the instructions on this page and everything now works great again.

http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-022793.htm

I have a 1.5 year old Inspiron E1505 running Windows XP Media edition XP Service Pack 2. The wireless network hardware is the Intel 3945ABG.

This issue has caused me intermittent problems in the past. Recently, it became constant. I tried all of the solutions below, and nothing solved the problem.

Finally, I uninstalled the most recent version of the Intel ProSet/Wireless driver...rebooted (also did a "scandisk" during the reboot) and then reinstalled a previous version. It seems to be working.

Here's the version that is working for me: Multi Language, Multi System, v.11.1.1.3 (TIC146561), A12

And a link: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R164255&SystemID=INS_PNT_E1405&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=9540&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=7&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=5&fileid=220545

I doubt that Dell will do much about this issue. It has never been truly fixed in the 1.5 years that I've owned this computer. And now Dell has moved on to Vista, so this XP issue is certainly way off their priority list.

FYI... I have a Inspiron e1405.

Good luck.

I had this same problem with my i9300 with Intel ProSet Wireless 2200BG. It started the moment I upgraded to Intel PROWireless Network Connection, Driver version 11.1. None of the mentioned "fixes" worked for me and I finally had to install an older version of the connection driver (v10.5.1.0). Once I reverted back to the older version my connection works as expected and I am no longer getting the "Problem Applying Profile" error message.

P.S. Dell tech support was no help at all with this issue. They claimed there was no known issue with the latest driver version.

It just happened to me again. So, I'm going back to the version recommended by locoqueso. Whew.

I may have spoke too soon. I reverted back to version 10.5.1.182 and it appeared to fix the problem for a couple reboots, but it's now happening again. I powered all the way down instead of rebooting and my wireless connection was not reinstated. I clicked Connect and the dreaded "Problem Applying Profile" message appeared.

I'm going to keep trying different versions until I find one that works. I am sure this is version related as it worked perfectly for almost two years until the day I upgraded to the latest version of the driver on Dell's site.

I had an Inspiron 6400 for around a year with no issues on this.

Recently updated the Dell Support Centre Software and Sonic (as per 'recommended downloads from Dell!) and immediately encounter the 'Applying Profile' issue. Only solution I found was to Windows restore to just before the install time of these and that resolved it. So in my view, for my machine, it was caused by one (or both of these). I've not investigated any furhter yet as all is good! Hope this helps someone.

Why do Dell recommend these updates when they cause problems !!!?
(I was also affected by the Dell Media Direct updated that cuased my typing to slow to a virtual halt!)

This was my post initially. Thanks to everyone that's responded.
I appear to have fixed this issue permanently as follows;
(Dell Inspiron 6400 running XP Home. Intel Pro set wireless 3945ABG Driver Date 26/09/07. Version 11.5.0.32)

Go to a website called 'Belarc' (Google will find it) Download the Belarc advisor.
This application will perform a full analysis of your machine including a full review of any Windows hotfixes and updates.

I ran the advisor and it highlighted a failed hotfix. By clicking on the hotfix link in the Belarc application, it took me directly to the update and I downloaded and installed it.

I have not had an issue since then. Hope it works for you.

I like the Belarc tool. However, when I ran the advisor it said that all my Microsoft hotfixes were up to date. I guess that's why the fix that I wrote about earlier in this thread worked for me. I have not had any problems with Intel Proset Wireless since I implemented that fix.

I tried the suggestion by tribecamike and it resolved the "Problem Applying Profile" error. It did however return when I shut down and re started. I then ran uninstall and chose "repair" instead of uninstall for the prowireless software. That seemed to do it.

My issue arose when I upgraded to Norton 360 v 2.o which completely disabled all wireless functionality and removed the software! I then had the chore of figuring out what I was supposed to have on my old 600M. I reinstalled from the driver disc that I fortunately found but even though all the software and drivers reinstalled (9.0.61 driver and 9.0 software) my wireless connection was intermittently very slow. I upgraded the drivers and software from the dell site and then started encountering various problems although it still ran. When I upgraded to v 10 that's when the profile errors started to appear. I'm now running 10.5.1.0 without errors (after following tribecamike's advice) but the connection speed is still at least half o f what it should be most of the time. Before all this started I had fast connection speeds all the time. Another laptop sitting right next to the Dell gets 54 mbps consistently.

I've since uninstalled Norton 360 v 2.0 and went back to v 1 so as not to encounter the same problem again.
