Intel PROSet/Wireless screen lockup

My wireless DLink router has worked fine for more than a year. My Inspiron 600m with WIN XP PRO SP2 still links to multiple routers without difficulty. A recent problem is that when I click on the Systray icon for the Intel PROSet/Wireless program, there is a long pause and then a popup error message says: "Failed to update profile list. Profile database in use. Please wait for Intel PROSet/Wireless to update the profile list."

Eventually the screen opens, but none of the buttons work and the program is locked up. My only option is to use CTRL-ALT-DEL to kill the screen. My wireless Internet access continues to function normally.

This is a new development that has me baffled. I updated to the latest version of Intel PROSet/Wireless from the Dell driver website, but the problem remains.

Can anyone offer any ideas or assistance? Many thanks.

i suspect the profile database not the Intel Proset utility. looks like the database or the profile files in the database are corrupt. how many wireless profiles do you have? export the profiles to the disk and then delete the profiles one by one and see if the issue occurs

Thanks for your help. I agree that the profiles database is possibly corrupted. I'm quite willing to delete all my profiles and re-enter just the two that are used. Can you tell me specifically how to do this manually, as the program locks up when I try to use the profiles button?

I found a solution to this problem, but it was rather unusual....

I tried the "repair" option under add/remove programs. That option locked up as well. Then I removed the Intel PROSet/WIreless program entirely (including profiles), not just once, but twice! Only after the second reinstallation did the program return to normal operation. Hope this helps anyone with a similar difficulty.
