I have no idea what the Dell representative was telling you.  It sounds like complete garbage to me.  Can you please explain what the problem is in a better way?  In  sincererly doubt that you need a new router if the current one works with other systems.  There should be no incompatiblity between the router and the wireless network adapter and I don't know of any $49 software that would fix such a problem.  Exactly how is your network set up?  When you say that you "cannot get my host computer to recognize the laptop", exactly what do you mean?  Is the laptop getting an IP address from the router? Do all computers have internet connectivity?  If the problem is that you cannot access files from one computer on the other, have you tried to temporarily disable all firewalls to see if the firewalls are a problem?  What is the full and exact text of any error messages you receive?  What do you mean by "host computer"?  With a router, all computers are equal.  You aren't trying to use Internet Connection Sharing are you?

Steve - told you I wasn't too computer literate. First, Dell wanted to charge me $49 to fix my "problem" by making some software configuration changes which I did not do.

I have two computers and a wireless laptop. The 2 computers are networked. I cannot network the laptop. I have DSL and my two computers do have internet. Just not my poor laptop. I call my main computer my "host" - let's call it #1. The other computer #2 networks into it and has internet.

I have used Network Setup Wizard, Add Network Place Wizard, Wireless Network Setup Wizard. I have no clue if the laptop is getting an IP address from the router. Dell had me ping different IP's.  When I pull up Network Connections - it says Laptop is connected and shared. Status shows Connected.  Gateway Residential seems to control things here.

When I go through Intel Wireless, I can see Profiles and Available Networks. I keep trying to change the General Settings to make the SSID the same as on #1, but it doesn't stay. Neither will the WEP key. When I change, I get "Unable to connect to pamsnetwork". I don't know how to change the Network name on the "Available Network" - this could be one problem. I'm ready to send this thing back!

Steve - I cannot uninstall the Internet Gateway Device - I think that it is part of Windows XP. I will have to get back to you on the ipconfig stuff (there's lots and I'll need to type it as I'm on a different computer as I don't have internet on laptop :smileymad:) but need to go over to my son's house right now. Thanks for your help. Pam

You say that their is "residential gateway" running on the laptop?  Did you install some kind of software for the router or your dsl modem?  If so, unisntall it.  You do not need it.  Once that it removed, do the following:

Go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

Steve - I have some time to go crazy right now. I am on my Home #1 computer. I went to the Broadband Management tool and under the DHCP (whatever that means) it has all 3 Host names - my #1 computer, my #2 computer, and my laptop. If that helps. I cannot see how I can delete or override the Internet GAteway on my laptop. I am seeing on the Network Connections box that it says my Laptop is connected, shared. However, I cannot connect to the internet nor is the laptop showing on MY Computer on my #1 computer.

The thing that keeps confusing me is where you say "I am seeing on the Network Connections box that it says my Laptop is connected, shared".  It is the shared part that I don't understand.  Exactly where are you seeing this.  Have you enabled Internet Connection Sharing on any of the network connections?  If so, disable it, because you don't use this feature with a router.

Unfortunately, the documentation does not show how things show up in the common Windows dialog boxes.  Do you have the documentation for this router?  If not, you can access it at:

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/broadbandnetworking/10_ProductDocumentation.mspx

You might want to try going to the section on setting up the network manually (Chapter 3) and check all of the settings through a web browser, making sure everything is set up correctly.

I see that Microsoft has the documentation for all of their Broadband Networking Base Stations on their support site.  Maybe if I read the manual for your particular router I could figure out what you are talking about.  Please tell me exactly which model you have.

Hello! I had the same problem. I had a MN-700 like you and a new internal wireless. It will not work. If you do get on it wil constantly kick you off. It is not th ecard at all it is the MN-700. You can even search the internet. It havs bad reviews. Ihave also had problem with using their own wireless adapters with the MN-700. Get a new rounter. Never buy that from mircosoft. I really suggest linksys. Have not had any problem yet and it is extreme fast!

I've been having the same type of problem with my new Inspiron 6000. I can't get it to network for anything. I first thought it was NIS, turned it off..nothing. Uninstalled...nothing.

I have no firewall running at all. Can't get it to network at all. I have an IBM that works fine..joins network. Same windows setup. Same network setup.

I've tried to see if there was some setting I was missing in the Intel software. If there is I can't find it.

This is very disappointing. I don't get it at all. I'm not a noob, but I can't figure it out for the life of me.

I can't share iTunes on the network. It won't see other shares. When I am trying to share from the laptop onto another computer the playlist shows up, when I try to connect to the playlist on the 6000 I get an error message. I hook my IBM to the same thing, works great. I use a Linksys router. I've tried other routers..still nothing.
