Intel/proset wireless
I've just bought a dell Inspiron 6400 notebook with 54mbps wireless mini card already installed. When I first started my notebook a popup notice came up telling me I was connected to NETGEAR at 54kbps, also listing an ip address.
I wasn't sure how this happened as I did not configure this to happen.
I'm not really sure how I am getting internet connection without dialling in to my telephone line.
I have not signed any contract with NETGEAR so would appreciate any advice anyone has.
Thanks
Sally

Likely your wireless card is accessing an unsecured wireless network of a close neighbor, without their specific permission this is considered illegal.

So I guess the best thing to do is to contact NETGEAR and find out how I can set up an account for myself.
If I decide not to use NETGEAR , should I tell them to contact the person and instruct them how to protect their account?
Regards

Contacting Netgear will do you no good. Netgear is the brand of the unsecured wireless router that you neighbor is using. Netgear makes routers. They do not provide internet service. If you want you own wireless network, you will need to subscribe to a broadband internet service available in your area and purchase and install your own wireless router.

While you are going through the process of obtaining broadband servive (do you already have that, through an Ethernet cable connection) and/or wireless access point, if you want your notebook NOT to connect wirelessly where you are then you can "Disable" or power off the radio which connects the wireless, something like Fn F2
