BRIANBORU,

You cannot simply bypass the cable modem and connect your Intel network card to the incoming cable.  The signal type used by the cable company is different than the signal type required for your Intel network card.  The cable modem provides this needed signal conversion and has a few other functions as well.  For some more info on what your cable modem is and what it really does, check these links:

hi there,
while i am on the subject .
i now have only internet protocol TCP/IP installed .
everything working extra fine.
i know how to find addresses with ipconfig.
what the deal with entering specific information rather than using "obtain automatically" or use the following and user configured?

is obtaining automatically better than entering the specic addresses.
thanks again
sincerely

It is usually preferable to let your computer "obtain automatically" the TCP/IP address data.  It is not uncommon for your Cable Internet company to change your IP address when it will help keep their network running more smoothly.  Some internet service companies still do require you to enter the TCP/IP data that they specify, but with most cable and dsl companies, it is best to let your computer obtain this information automatically.
