The homade cable might not have all the wires connected and might be the issue(a small short in it). Plugging it in and out might make the connection not work and work.
Some mistakes people make are they forget to turn the wireless off when using the ethernet cable. You cannot connect to both, so maybe that was where your error was.
All I can suggest is that the next time it happens, run an ipconfig /all log and see what the results are.

when i ran it through a cable tester it came back good...
