I just got a new 9200 w/ the 2200BG and am also getting connection issues w/ this card. I can either connectly slowly (High latency in games) or connect intermitently as you seem to be experiencing.
Tried a few things, but I don't want to mess w/ my network, cause I have like 7 other computers connecting to it. 3 of which are wifi and none of those have connection problems.
Well, I haven't yet tried disabling WZC nor have I updated the PRO/Set software, but I did reflash my bios. I had been running A11 and just figured I would reflash; mostly just 'cause. So far (knock on wood) I haven't had any disconnects. We'll see... I was planning on doing a full format and reinstall this weekend as well.
Tried updating software, manually setting power management and disabled the windows wireless, and still no dice, constant disconnects still reside. I also tried the card in my 8500, still have the same problems, although my old TM 1300 works fine in the 9200. So I'll probably be buying a TM 1350 for the new comp if Dell doesn't let me exchange.
I am curios... do you have UPnP enabled on your router? It's a shaky theory at this point... but I restored factory defaults on my router and then started making my normal changes... I think I started having problems after enabling UPnP.... again, a shaky theory at this point.
Okay... this is getting ridiculous... I am tempted to open a new thread... but we'll see.
Here is the setup:
Router: Linksys WRT54G v2 which is Centrino Certified; latest 3.01.3 Firmware
System: Inspiron 8600 (a Centrino Laptop)
WLAN Card: Intel 2200BG which is Centrino Certified
WLAN Card Drivers: Latest Dell Drivers
Previous WLAN Card: Dell TrueMobile 1300 mPCI
Problem: What seems randomly, wireless signal lost; wireless network cannot be found unless WLAN card is disabled and re-enabled. Disconnects seem to come in waves...
Frustration: All centrino products... should work flawlessly... HA!
Background:
- Previous WLAN Card had NO problems
- Linksys WGA54G (Game adapater) being used on the WLAN as well; does not have connection problems. Confirmed because I was playing on XBox Live when my laptop was dropping the connection; however, I have problems even when I am not playing on XBox Live (game adapter still has power to it); However, previous WLAN card had no problems co-existing
- No security on WLAN (trust me, it is not needed where I live)
- Happens using both the "Intel Client" and "Microsoft Client"
Steps Tried: (Problems before AND after changes that follow)
- Formatting - No luck
- Reflashing Router Firmware
- Router Settings: Reset to factory defaults, then made minor changes:
- Router name changed
- Time Zone Changed
- Channel Changed
- SSID Changed
- Block Anonymous Internet Request Disabled (To allow for pinging; I do have a reason)
- Password Changed
- Remote Management Enabled via HTTPS
- Remote Management Port Changed
- Setting WLAN Card to G-Mode Only
- Setting WLAN Card to Minimum Power Saving
- Setting WLAN Card to Maximum Transmit Power
- Disabling Wireless Zero Configuration
Other Notes:
- The connection only seems to drop when it actually BEING USED. Last night I was playing on XBox Live for several hours with the laptop connected, but nothing really "using" the connection on the laptop. Within TWO web pages begin loaded, the connection was dropped on the laptop, XBox Live was not disconnected.
Did you happen to install the Intel wireless management software? I did that when I first installed my 2200BG in my Inspiron 8500. I found that it was conflicting with Windows' own management utilities. I was having the same issues that you describe. I uninstalled the Intel software and I have not had any connection issues since.
The software is (was) installed; I have tried using the Microsoft client as well as the Intel client and have connection problems with both. I have not, though, tried installing the card (and software) such that the Intel Management software is not installed. I have since reinstalled the TM1300 because I was getting so frustrated. I even had a BSOD... THE ABSOLUTE FIRST BSOD with this laptop and it was related to the WLAN card.
in any cases.... I am on the phone with India...I mean Dell, to get the card replaced.
I spent 58 minutes and 14 seconds from dialing to hanging up. It took nearly 10 minutes to navigate the absurd menu system. I did notice one thing. On my invoice form, three numbers were listed: Sales, Technical Support, and Customer Service. I at one point or another tried all three numbers. All three numbers had the EXACT same menu exact same voice, etc. What is the POINT if all three numbers connect to the SAME system????
Any ways, I was then on hold for another 25 minutes before a agent picked up. As I feared... we had trouble communicating due to a "language barrier." He also had no clue what he was talking about... asking me to look for things related to the Truemobile series of cards when I have an Intel card. I seriously had to forcefully repeat I have an INTEL WLAN card... NOT a Truemobile. His troubleshooting was pointless... asking me to place the laptop closer to the router... despite having an excellent signal....
I could go on and on... I knew the call would be a waste of time, save starting the process to get it replaced. Yet, it was the first time I have had to call Dell Support since getting my laptop a year ago... and had I not decided to have fun with a new WLAN card.... wouldn't have had to call.
Any updates on whether or not Dell was able to replace the card and whether or not it was successful? I had a third party prism54 based mini-pci card, but when I added a Truemobile 300 (bluetooth) the third party card conflicted with it. I had to buy an officially support card for my 8500. Since I run Linux, the dell truemobile card was out (no drivers), and I went with the Intel PRO 2200BG.
The problems only occur under Windows. It can't keep a connection, the connection speed drops, interactive sessions like putty timeout regularly. Strange thing, this card works absolutely perfectly under linux. Zero problems.
Problem solved. Sorta.
I switched to an older version of the driver.
v.8.0.12.12000 8.0.0.162, A00 version.
This seems to solve the problem of unstable connections. The Intel Pro/set tool in this version doesn't handle WPA, so I need to allow windows to manage the wireless connections, but it seems to work.
The latest drivers: v.9.0.0.61, 9.0.1.57, A08 and the version just prior to them v.9.0.0.60, 9.0.1.57, A06 also have the same instability problems as to the drivers directly downloaded from Intel. Maybe something in the 9.0 branch broke things.

Update the Intel Pro/Set software, disable WZC, turn off automatic power management.
