Internet Call Waiting

Hi everyone,

I have a Dell Dimension Pentium III 600 MHz computer with a 3Com/US Robotics 56K dialup internal modem (bought in 2000).  Recently, I signed up with a new ISP that offers "Internet Call Waiting" through a Lucent program called "Online Communications Center."  What is supposed to happen is that when I'm online, if a call comes in, the software activates and tells me who is calling.  I then have a choice of disconnecting my internet connection and answering the call or sending the call to voice mail.

Anyway, what happens is, I'm online, I get an incoming call, the software activates, but all the information is question marks, so I can't read who's calling or figure which button to push.  I have tried downloading patches from Dell and US Robotics, but no luck.  I have tried technical support from the ISP, Lucent, and 3Com (haven't tried US Robotics, but I will).  Anyone have any ideas how I can get this thing to work?  Thanks.

Are you sure that modem is v.92 capable? I know time flies, but I didn't think v.92 was out in 2000.

And Lucent software working with a 3Com/USR modem? Dogs sleeping with cats......

Modem on hold is part of the feature set of v.92. Yes, both your modem and the host need to be v.92 capable.

Does the modem have to be V.92 capable to do this right?  No one tells me this stuff.  The configuration profile does not give V.92 as an option.  Can I download this or do I have to get a whole new modem?

My other option is just to forget this feature and go back to my old ISP.

ddeerrff, thanks for your quick response.

Here's the update (with more detail):

My dialup ISP (Cavalier Telephone, which is also my phone service) offers an internet call waiting service called "Online Communications Center." Basically, if I get a call while I'm online, I get a window that pops up so I can decide whether to take the call, ignore it, send it to voice mail, etc. It works with my caller ID so I am supposed to see who's calling. The software was made by Lucent.

The problem is that the window pops up OK when there's an incoming call, but all I see are question marks. This includes the call log, the number of the incoming call, and all the buttons that tell me what I'm supposed to do. I have done a "trial and error" to click one of the buttons, which indeed works by disconnecting the internet connection and making the phone ring.

Does anyone know what I might be able to do so I can read what I'm doing? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times. I have called Cavalier but they seem to have run out of ideas. I have tried to call Lucent but they are absolutely clueless (they've never heard of this thing yet they invented it!) I tried buying a new modem (V.92 instead of the V.90 that I have) but that didn't work either (got a lot of blue screen fatal exception errors, but that's a whole 'nother story). I looked online for documentation (including Lucent's and Cavalier's websites) but haven't been able to find anything.

I have a Dell Pentium III, Dimension XPST600, 128 MB RAM, US Robotics V.90 modem, Windows 98 SE, Norton Internet Security 2003 (which I have configured to accept the Online Communications Center software), and IE 6.0. I bought the computer in May 2000 and it works pretty well otherwise.

Can anyone give me other ideas of making this work right? Or is this one of those deals where it's either incompatible with my computer or the computer is too old?

Thanks in advance.

Ron J.
