Internet connected while shut down?

I have a Dimension B110 and I use DSL to connect to the internet. I run updated antivirus programs weekly (with realtime monitoring of all activity) and I recently switched from Microsoft's firewall to one called Comodo. My question is, is it possible for my computer to be connected to the internet while it is shut down? I ask because recently I have noticed the "Ethernet" and "Internet" lights blinking on my modem while the computer is shut down. I normally only noticed these lights when the computer was on and connected to the internet. Thanks for your help.

The lights are blinking because the modem is checking for a connection.   If your computer is off, then it cannot be on the internet.  Some computers have a Wake on LAN feature that allows you to turn the computer on over the network, but you need to set this up and send a special code to do so.  If it is not set up then it can't happen.

Thanks!  That sets my mind at ease. After I opened a bad e-mail a year ago and got hijacked, I tend to worry a bit. I Have since had to reformat my hard drive and I no longer open e-mails unless I know the sender, but I am still a bit paranoid. Since I have never set up the "wake on LAN" feature, I am pretty sure that it is disabled (if I even have it.)  Thanks again!
