I just bought the same computer. Another discussion talked about the likelihood of Norton being the problem. I have not disabled it yet, but it is worth the try. I am having the same problem whether I try to dial up with AOL or my other provider. What a pain! Please write and let us know what helped you get it working!
We have the Mcafee security and have tried disabling that, unistalling, reinstalling and yet nothing. Still haven't found anything useful and been trying everything. Have you found a solution yet? Its a shame that even Dell tech support can't figure it out. I am ready to send it back and soooon. Keep me apprised. Thanks,
I have the same problem with an Inspiron 1501 with Vista Basic Home.
A look at the modem diagnostic log shows that the connection is being dropped
due to a failure of Carrier Retrain, whatever that is.
Anybody have any idea ?
It looks like Dell has made this product an orphan, since they show no interest in fixing it.
I guess i forgot to mention that I DID talk to Dell, and the man talked me through disabling programs at startup. Once, I did this, the internet worked fine. However, one of the programs was Avast, the antivirus program. I started this back up and THEN was disconnected, and still disconnect within a minute of getting online. That is why I think it has something to do with the antivirus. I had Norton on first, and it did the same thing, so it is not the Avast alone that is the problem. ANy ideas?
This sounds like a common problem, but why does no one have the answer. I tried to google carrier retrain, and got no where either. Thanks for the idea though. I will check my modem deagnostic log, and see if it also says the same thing. I do think it has to do with the antivirus though.
My buddy has a b130 and his connectiion fails all the time but only using wireless sometimes it'll work for 15 or 20 min and other times an hour or more but after about 20 min the IP will renew and it will work fine. I tried updating the driver and reinstalling his network card and went as far as reinstalling xp all together but still it will fail. Any fixes or ideas would be helpfull Thanks.
Dell took control of my Inspiron, enabled Local DHCP Server on the router, and changed WEP Keys 2 through 4 to "0000000000". The connection wouldn't drop but it was slowwwwwwwwwww.
I changed the WEP Keys back to their original values, installed the latest version of the router firmware, and changed the router wireless channel from "6" to "11".
