Internet Connection in France

If all goes well, I'm hoping to move to France from the UK sometime soon. Am I right in assuming that my NETGEAR DG834G wireless ADSL modem router will work in France when I've fitted a local phone cable and ADSL filters? And what about my Diamond 56e Pro modem which I use as a backup? Am I asking too much to think that might also work?

Any advice gratefully received!

The modem actually depends on what protocol they will be using.  ADSL will use either PPPOE or PPPOA the former being more compatible so I guess that's why the Italains like PPPOA.

I believe that the UK and France use PPPOE for the most part and I have only encountered PPPOA here in Italy.  Which modem do you have?

I would really like to have one of those Linksys ADSL modems sold in England, but none of the vendors will ship to Italy or to an American APO address.

The ADSL modem router that I'm using at present is a wired ORIGO 8400 cheap and cheerful model I got from eBuyer.com some time ago. I bought a Netgear DG834G wireless modem router here with a view to relegating the ORIGO to an emergency backup, but had to lend it to a client to replace a failed Linksys while it was away for repair, so I've never actually used the Netgear.

If you wanted to get hold of one of the UK Linksys ADSL modems, I'm sure we could work something out. PM me if you think I can help.

Thanks for coming back - so I will just need to match the protocols on the ADSL modem router to match my ISP's configuration, just as in the UK? Otherwise, the hardware is the same?
